Job Duties
The Ashland Residency Specialty Crew is seeking a highly skilled individual to perform complex concrete work, operate power tools, heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming, and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform heavy manual labor. As a Specialty Construction Operator, you will:
• perform complex concrete work such as curb and gutter, drop inlets, and headwalls, etc.
• participate as a working team member performing heavy manual labor including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
• complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
• demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and use equipment properly and safely
• attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
• respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
This position works on special projects that require early and late hours. Depending on the assignment, work hours may change day to day.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a valid CDL. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
• knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
• skill in the operation of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
• skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
• ability to perform heavy manual labor
• ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter; must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
• ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
• ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• valid driver’s license required
Additional Considerations
• valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
• skill in pouring/finishing concrete and building concrete structures to include sidewalks, curb and gutter, drop inlets, headwalls, etc.
• experience in laying asphalt to appropriate grade for small projects to include, pipe replacement, shoulder wedges, and typical patches
• experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
