Job Duties

The Assistant Superintendent of Communications Strategy and Engagement reports to the Chief of Staff. The most important role of this position is supporting, developing, coaching, and supervising internal leadership among the communications and engagement division towards high-quality, accurate, and aligned deliverables and resources while engaging with districts, schools, and partners with transparency, accessibility, and accuracy in mind.

The Assistant Superintendent of Communications Strategy and Engagement supports the work of the Virginia Department of Education by providing leadership, strategic input and direction for external and internal communications while also overseeing the day-to-day functions of a dynamic communications team. This position supports the Superintendent and her office in a variety of functions as well as oversees the parent engagement office. This leader will manage a team that develops packages of School Division resources to support key strategic initiatives as well as a strategic social media campaign to elevate critical strategies.

The Assistant Superintendent of Communications Strategy and Engagement will have serve as a critical resource for both the communications and engagement teams but also school divisions across the agency as they develop plans and implement initiatives connected to the strategic plan.

The Assistant Superintendent of Communications Strategy and Engagement, as a leader in the Superintendent’s Office, will support/lead district and stakeholder understanding of strategic department initiatives, products, and services, and work closely with other department divisions to provide actionable deliverables for districts and partners. Managing divisions that produce field-facing information, the Assistant Superintendent will help to monitor and assess the impact of these initiatives, with a special emphasis on the department’s strategic initiatives, and will support others in their understanding of these processes including colleagues at the department, CORE regional offices, and district personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong reputation with press relations and media engagement.
• Documented success with performance management and overall team management.
• Knowledge and experience with statewide education communication strategy preferred.
• Experience in designing and executing stakeholder engagement series.
• Ability to design communications expectations for large scale organization.
• Deep expertise in overseeing government relations, school media relations, public media relations, and social media platforms.
• Excellent organization and communication skills.
