The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.

We are seeking an administrative professional to fill the role of Nutritionist Associate for our WIC department. The Nutritionist Associate Independently assesses nutrition status/eligibility of WIC applicants/participants by interviewing and collecting necessary information. Interprets, documents, calculates and compiles data through obtaining hematological values and anthropometric measure and medical history. Provides appropriate nutrition education, interprets assessment data to develop a care plan, works with participants to set goals, identifies and makes appropriate referrals. You will prescribe appropriate food package tailored to participants' needs following WIC Policy & Procedures. Schedules, provides and documents basic and secondary nutrition education for all WIC participants based on assessed needs per WIC policy.
This individual follows WIC Breastfeeding policies and guidelines. Promotes and supports breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding through the education of all pregnant WIC participants. Promotes continuation of breastfeeding through education of WIC breastfeeding women through support groups and education on loaning and use of breastfeeding equipment. Makes appropriate referrals to BF Coordinator/BF Peer Counselor. Perform income eligibility on WIC applicants following income guidelines, collection of required documents to determine eligibility, scans all records to Crossroads. Facilitates Group Nutrition Education including preparation of topic, bulletin board materials, handouts and talking points. Performs clerical duties like uploading benefits into the eWIC card, examines and corrects food packages before issuance and checking to make sure next. appointments are scheduled. Refers high risk clients to Nutritionists. as needed. Provides excellent customer service in regard to checking/returning voice mail messages in a timely manner. Performing front desk/clerical duties. Calling assigned Reminder Calls, Missed Appointments, and Action Due Listings. Use No Show Report generated from Crossroads to contact unserved clients. Conducts and submits inventory on supplies, assures supplies are maintained, including making copies, ordering or informing designated co-workers/Supervisor. Assists in outreach activities to promote WIC Program. Orders and follows-up CAP-ordered only formulas.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Federal WIC Grant through USDA for a 1-year period ending September 30th each year. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant or non-grant funds.
Wage employees are subject to the following conditions of employment:
• Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
• Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore, they are not eligible for benefits
which are provided to salaried employees, such as leave credits, holiday pay, insurance, access to the grievance procedure, etc.
• Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work.
• Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average
over the course of a year. Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1,500 hours during the period of May 1 – April 30 of
the following year (the Standard Measurement Period).
• Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1,500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period, the employee may be
rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.
• Wage employees are eligible to apply for all classified positions for which recruitment has been initiated, including those limited
to State Employees Only.
• If a wage employee becomes employed in a classified position, he/she will be eligible to purchase retirement credit for the time
worked as a wage employee. • Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic knowledge of computer applications.
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency and must adhere to VDH's driver safety policy.
Basic Knowledge of nutrition and breastfeeding standards.
Ability to interview clients and collect client information: interpret, document, calculate, compile routine data, routinely obtain blood samples/finger stick from infants, women and children; provide patient education.
Provide patient education and facilitate Group Nutrition.
Must be able to communicate with a variety of patients and work effectively with a member of the healthcare team.
Knowledge of community resources and referral network.
Additional Considerations
• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in nutrition or related field preferred
• Training, job experience, or coursework in Nutrition, Dietetics, food services, or a related area preferred
