Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Office of Meat & Poultry Services, Division of Animal & Food Industry Services, is seeking a qualified individual for the position of EIAO (Enforcement, Investigation and Analysis Officer). This position is responsible for conducting Food Safety Assessments (FSA) in Virginia meat and poultry plants as well as providing outreach and technical resources and assistance to new and existing clients. This position provides consumer protection through enforcement of a comprehensive system of inspection laws and regulations designated to provide and maintain a safe, unadulterated, wholesome, and accurately labeled meat and poultry supply. Other responsibilities include performing reviews at custom and poultry exempt facilities across the state, providing inspection technical information and guidance concerning inspection and exemptions to established operators and interested groups and individuals. This position will be home based with statewide responsibilities requiring extensive travel with occasional overnight stays. The selected applicant should live convenient to a VDACS Regional Office in either Richmond, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg, Wytheville or Roanoke. A state vehicle will be assigned for business use only.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of meat and poultry inspection and of the meat and poultry processing industry. Knowledge of custom and poultry exempt regulations is needed. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures and to evaluate and report information and data. Must be self-motivated, capable of working independently, have good organizational skills, and must be capable of exercising sound judgement and have effective oral and written communication skills. Computer proficiency to include standard office applications such as MS Office. Ability to provide excellent customer service and to interact professionally with clients to provide requested information and outreach opportunities. Current or recent experience in a related meat and poultry inspection (slaughter and processing) program providing similar responsibilities is needed. The selected applicant must have or be able to obtain and retain a LincPass to access federal information systems, as well as a valid driver’s license with a responsible driving record. Candidate must be able to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes long periods of standing, walking, and driving long distances; the ability to distinguish colors and odors; to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally; exposure to work in environments with extreme temperature changes (hot and cold); high noise levels; and wet and slippery floors. Must be able to successfully complete the Federal EIAO training within the first 6 months of hire date. HS Diploma/GED required. This position requires extensive driving throughout the state, occasional out of state training, and overnight stays.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of animal science, agriculture, food science/microbiology or a related field. Knowledge of related Federal Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and state regulations, policies, and procedures and of the Public Health Information System (PHIS) is also preferred in addition to completion of the federal Enforcement, Investigation and Analysis Officer training program. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
