Job Duties
VDOT's Staunton District Location and Design section is seeking Roadway Design Engineer to design, manage, and produce Right of Way and Construction Roadway plans/projects in an accurate and precise manner. As qualified candidate will:
• Work with team members and consultants and will maintain applicable skills in new design technology/construction methodology.
• Develop and review sub-components and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects.
• Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports.
• Provide extraordinary customer service and engage all stakeholders to develop solutions that balance the needs of citizens, special interest groups, and local governments.
• Complete roadway design tasks in MicroStation, GeoPak, Igrds, PPMS, PCES and other non-CADD applications.
• Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
• Experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.
• Experience applying design standards, specifications, policies and procedures.
• Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
• Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.
• Ability to plan and schedule work.
• Skill in delivering exemplary customer service
• Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.

As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 – Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within district boundaries, including those that administratively report to Central Office, may be assigned to emergency response duties at the discretion of the District Engineer or Administrator. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment. Report to work when called to support emergency operations. Maintain communications regarding work schedules with both your regular and emergency response supervisor. Notify emergency supervisor of pre-approved leave that would impact rotational schedule and your reporting for duty if activated. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Makes personal contact with emergency response supervisor to determine if and when services are needed for approaching event.
