The Fredericksburg District (VDOT) is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician to diagnose, repair, inspect, and maintain motorized and mechanical construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.

This position is at the Fredericksburg District Shop located in Stafford County.

The Core Responsibilities of the position include:
Diagnosis and Repair – Diagnosing vehicle and equipment failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources. Performing repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes. Recommending outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
Virginia State Inspections – Performing safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment.
Preventive Maintenance – Performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to PM schedule and guidelines. Making repairs as needed when deficiencies are found and or recommend outsourcing.
Welding Repair and Fabrication – Designing, fabricating, modifying, and welding components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.
Emergency Operations – Preparing equipment for emergency operations. Making equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs.
Information Processing and Paperwork – Preparing, processing, and maintaining require maintenance and repair documentation. Generating, completing and closing out work orders in computer system. Performing time and leave entry. Preparing parts requests. Completing paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.

*Note: Safety shoes are required for this position.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
• Virginia State Inspection License - Class A
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor
• Ability to operate various types of light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, equipment, and tools in a safe and efficient manner
• Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter
• Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations
• Ability to read, comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges, and testing devices
• Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
• Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment
• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment
• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports

 

Additional Considerations

• A combination of training, experience, or education in automotive repair, maintenance, or related field desired
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications
• Experience using cutting and welding equipment
• Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment

Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
