Job Duties
The current hybrid work schedule for technology employees is three days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) on-site and two days (Monday and Friday) remote.
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a skilled Database Administrator to oversee the daily operations of the SQL Database Servers in VRS, ensuring their installation, maintenance, upgrades, and overall management. This role is crucial for maintaining the security, integrity, performance, and availability of all agency data. Additionally, this role develops and implements database administration procedures, standards, and guidelines and is responsible for updating, modifying, and removing data in accordance with VRS policies, while ensuring adherence to backup protocols.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
• Participates in the design, development and implementation of databases, often leveraging new technologies.
• Installations and configures of SQL Server 2016, 2019 and SQL 2022 in clustered environments.
• Administers databases running on SQL Server clusters, SQL Always On platforms, including the latest versions (SQL 2016, 2019 & 2022).
• Ensures compliance with industry regulations and best practices related to data security and privacy.
• Monitors and maintains the effective operation of databases and servers.
• Provides production support for SQL databases as required.
• Performs daily data fixes and refreshes, managing and completing ad-hoc database requests.
• Refreshes the Lower Environment, ensuring data cleanliness.
• Implements and manages database backup and recovery strategies to maintain data integrity and availability.
• Conducts data scrambling in compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.
• Collaborates with cross-hierarchal teams to enhance services across agency lines.
• Works effectively with all levels of management and staff to improve processes and procedures.
• Participates in Disaster Recovery exercises and documents procedures.
• Provides other technical support and completes special projects and tasks as required.
• Participates in on-call rotations.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
Four (4) years of experience working with MS SQL Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 on Windows Servers or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent database skills and the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of the database. Demonstrated project management, troubleshooting, analytical, problem resolution, and customer service skills. Abilities to effectively communicate; prioritize; deal with multiple priorities and activities simultaneously; work in a team environment. Excellent database administration skills and a good working experience of MS SQL Server including Clustering, Always on Availability Groups, SSIS & SSRS. Working knowledge of Rubrik Backups, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft Azure SQL Database, AWS Redis, Mongo DB, etc. Demonstrated experience with Data modeling, SQL scripting and Powershell. Experience in DB Provisioning, Migrations, Monitoring and Performance tuning . Experience with SQL Maintenance tools/applications (such as Idera monitoring tools).
Additional Considerations
MS SQL Server, Azure certification is preferred.
