Job Duties

We are seeking a Part-Time Security Officer, which includes a Shift Differential in order to protect hospital-controlled properties and equipment and provide a safe and secure environment for Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI). This position patrols the facilities grounds and buildings ensuring the areas are secure and that safety issues are addressed. It supports activities of the facilities such as responding to behavioral emergencies, escorting individuals we serve on Special Hospitalizations, patrol nursing unit every 15 minutes, processing electronic fingerprinting, ensuring equipment temperatures are functioning properly, responding to alarms, supporting emergency management programs, transporting individuals, and providing support to the switchboard/reception. The successful candidate will have knowledge of Virginia state codes, laws, and regulations; ability to follow written and oral instructions; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; have ability to write reports; have the ability to use Microsoft products; and to use interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to work mandatory overtime as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the following standards, codes, laws, policies, procedures, and forms:
• Joint Commission accreditation standards
• Virginia state codes, laws, and regulations
• Virginia Department of Transportation policies, procedures, and forms
• Virginia Department of General Services policies, procedures, and forms
• Virginia State Police motor vehicle accident reporting policies, procedures, and forms
• Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute Policies & Procedures

Skill in operating the following equipment:
• Sedans, mini-vans, vans, pick-up trucks, and straight (box) trucks
• Battery jumper cables, and “Slim Jim” door openers
• Photo-identification camera, laminator, and fingerprinting machine
• Portable metal detector wands
• Manual pull fire station alarms, and tamper covers
• Portable fire extinguishers and sprinkler shut-off valves

Ability to correctly and safely complete the following:
• Read, write, and speak in the English language
• Follow written and oral instructions
• Satisfactorily complete the hospital training program for Security Officers (Security Academy)
• All required licenses and competencies required of this position
• Use effective interpersonal skills to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, and clients from varied backgrounds
• State and hospital forms in narrative and checklist format
• Client management techniques of TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia) or successor training
• Successfully interact with diverse population of hospital clents, staff, and visitors
• Operate mechanical equipment controls and shut-off valves
• Clear snow/ice accumulation from hospital entrances and state/rental vehicles
• Isolate hazardous conditions via barricade signs, tape, pylons, and seals

Report writing a plus!
Experience with MH population a plus
