Job Duties

The Prince William Health District (PWHD) seeks to fill a Public Health Nurse (PHN) Senior position. The ideal candidate is an experienced registered nurse committed to public health practice and energized by opportunities inherent in a dynamic healthcare environment. The PHN Senior position requires an understanding of public health practice with a history of progressive professional growth. You will be the subject matter expert and work district-wide with the PWHD nursing staff and community partners to ensure a quality tuberculosis (TB) elimination program as well as a competent healthcare workforce. This position provides direct client care in addition to providing back-up support to the immunization program and other communicable disease prevention related initiatives. Duties include policy interpretation, development of program goals and objectives, partnership development, and staff training as well as providing professional nursing care to clients in clinics, homes, and/or other community venues. This position provides non-supervisory leadership, monitors service delivery for compliance to applicable policies and procedures, reports program performance to funding sources and agency staff, and promotes the program to increase utilization and public awareness. Direct client care duties include nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. May supervise support staff. Actions require licensure as a RN by state code.

The PHN Sr will be based at either our Woodbridge location (4001 Prince William Parkway, Woodbridge, VA 22192) or Manassas location (9301 Lee Avenue, Manassas, VA 20110), however travel between both locations (and other locations in the community) is required.

Mileage reimbursement is available for any work-related travel. Typical work hours are 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Evening or weekend hours may be required depending on community needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR, able to be fit tested and perform fit testing for other staff in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) [Ref.2] regulations
• Experience functioning in a leadership role; experience and ability to function independently in the home/clinic/community/school settings and prioritize workload
• Exercises sound nursing judgment; effective verbal, written, interpersonal/physical assessment skills
• Experience and ability to enter, review, analyze data and statistics and produce reports and/or recommendations from such information; ability to work in a fast paced, data driven environment
• Experience and knowledge of nursing process, health maintenance, disease processes, physical and behavioral sciences, case management process and basic principles of epidemiology
• Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team
• Knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications; including Internet, Microsoft Office, and Google Mail applications
• Experience and ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
• Excellent communication, data interpretation and computer skills
• Must be able to demonstrate decision making skills, teaching, interviewing, counseling skills and the ability to analyze problems/situations and problem solve

Additional Considerations

• Public health experience
• If working with the EPI response team, Certified in Infection Control (CIC) preferred and experience in hospital or long-term care facility infection control
• Excellent communication, data interpretation and computer skills
• Understanding of TB control strategies
