Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) is seeking a Watershed Program Coordinator to coordinate the agency's forested watershed program.
This position reports to the Chief of Operations and provides oversight of forested watershed management initiatives and programs aimed at improving water quality throughout the Commonwealth.
Duties include:
• Executing Virginia's Riparian Buffer Action Plan
• Managing financial incentive programs and funding for landowners to implement watershed management activities
• Overseeing the agency's Riparian Forests for Landowners (RFFL) program including supervising the RFFL Coordinator
• Managing grants and other funding streams as it relates to the agency's forested watershed program
• Providing critical forestry input to partner groups and organizations regarding watershed initiatives
• Providing resources, information, and training to DOF field staff to enable them to effectively and efficiently provide watershed management services to forest landowners
• Communicating vision, guidance, and priorities to agency staff related to watershed initiatives outlined in the agency's strategic plan
• Reporting agency data into the BMP warehouse and setting agency riparian buffer goals
• Coordinating agency watershed initiatives among regional watershed specialists and riparian buffer specialists
Location: This position will be assigned to the DOF's State Headquarters located in Charlottesville, VA. Limited teleworking options are available (typically 1 day a week).
Minimum Qualifications
Experience in forestry or a related field; technical experience and in-depth knowledge of forest hydrology; knowledge of stream morphology, stream restoration techniques and riparian buffer establishment strategies; knowledge of streamside forest ecosystems and forest management techniques; ability to work effectively in an interagency environment and maintain effective working relationships with partner groups and organizations; experience providing effective oral presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Must be able to communicate effectively in the English language, demonstrate excellent oral and written interpersonal communication skills; ability to occasionally travel around the state and stay overnight; experience with and ability to effectively use a PC and Microsoft Office software; ability to effectively work as a member of a team of diverse individuals.
Additional Considerations
Experience with data tracking and monitoring using digital databases; experience using GIS software; experience working with grants or alternative funding opportunities.
