Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.
This sworn position enforces all applicable Virginia statutes, federal laws, and the rules and regulations of the 13 health regulatory boards. Principal duties include independently conducting the initial review, evaluation and timely processing of a variety of complaints against health care practitioners licensed, certified or registered by the Department, independently investigating complaints of alleged violations and submitting reports which clearly reflect investigative results in order to safeguard the lives, health, and safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
Must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high-speed internet access within the following district or within a 30-mile radius of district borders as a condition of employment: Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of the cities of Richmond, Hopewell, Colonial Heights and Petersburg, and the Counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Caroline, King William, Goochland, Powhatan, Amelia, Dinwiddie, Sussex, Prince George, Charles City and New Kent.
Minimum Qualifications
• Considerable critical thinking skills and ability to assess complex data for possible violations of policy, law or regulation, and the ability to rapidly and accurately communicate the results of the assessment;
• Recent, progressive investigative experience.
• Considerable knowledge, skills and abilities related to investigative techniques to include interviewing, data collection and the analysis of complex data, records and reports;
• Comprehensive knowledge of multidisciplinary health care practices and demonstrated ability to interpret laws and regulations;
• Strong self-direction/motivation with excellent organizational skills and demonstrated abilities to effectively and independently manage multiple assignments and meet multiple deadlines;
• Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to maintain confidentiality and to work effectively as a member of a team;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including impartiality and objectivity with a demonstrated ability to compose clear and concise verbal and written assessment results/reports;
• Skill in the use of a personal computer with standard office software for report writing, information exchange, research, and data management;
• Must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high speed internet access, within assigned district(s) or within a 30-mile radius of region border(s) as a condition of employment. Additional Considerations
The following are advantageous:
• Work experience as a health care practitioner and/or formal work experience independently conducting various types of healthcare investigations, including but not limited to fraud, risk management, quality assurance, background checks, client abuse, or criminal, civil and/or regulatory investigations involving healthcare practice.
• Prior experience taking and assessing consumer complaints, both verbally and written, and clearly communicating the results in an efficient and accurate manner.
• A working knowledge of health care/medical terminology in order to interpret health care records and communicate with health care professionals, and of federal or state health care laws and regulations.
• Prior experience working with administrative law.
Special Instructions
This is a wage (hourly) position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period
