Job Duties
The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for securing major gifts that align with board-approved funding priorities while managing a portfolio of 75+ prospects and conducting 20+ donor meetings per month. This role involves identifying and cultivating new major gift prospects, completing 75+ first-time visits annually, and securing 12+ gifts per year, typically ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. The officer will develop effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to maintain strong donor relationships while supporting planned giving efforts through the Mathews Legacy Society. Additionally, they will encourage Annual Fund contributions from major donors, ensuring continued financial support for key initiatives. The Major Gifts Officer will also assist with JYF, Inc. board meetings, preparing materials, liaising with board members, and supporting nominating efforts. Beyond these core responsibilities, they will provide general departmental support as needed to ensure seamless operations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and superb interpersonal skills
• Organized, prepared, detail oriented, and commitment to follow through
• Ability to meet annual assigned performance metrics for gift officer activity and fundraising results
• Ability to track and report on progress using Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar fundraising database
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar database
• Ability to work within a fluid environment and to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities
• Collaborative skillset; ability to effectively work with staff and leadership at all levels
• Ability to empathize with donors and clearly communicate organizational mission and goals
• Willingness and ability for regional and national travel; some night and weekend work required
• Highest ethical standards and a strong commitment to inclusiveness
• Ability to process and secure confidential information
• Previous experience fundraising with a demonstrated track record of success in face-to-face solicitations, or equivalent experience in a sales or marketing role preferred.
• Successful experience managing positive, rewarding relationships with donors or clients
• Experience in a museum setting helpful
