Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forestry is seeking to fill a Water Quality Specialist position in our Central Region.
This is a permanent position with residency requirements. Incumbent must reside in the multi-county work area which includes Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Appomattox, Prince Edward, Campbell, and Pittsylvania . This position reports to the Water Quality Engineer.
The Water Quality Specialist is a critical position in the Central Region providing consistent enforcement of the Silvicultural Water Quality Law as outlined in Section 10.1-1181 of the Code of Virginia. The duties of this position include providing guidance and technical assistance to field personnel within the assigned area; training and providing technical recommendations to the forest community in an ongoing effort to increase the usage of Best Management Practices (BMPs) during silvicultural activities; developing pre-harvest plans and other complex site-specific recommendations for ensuring proper timber harvests. This position is also a responder for wildland fires and other Governor declared emergencies across the Commonwealth.

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of forest harvesting systems. Ability to design effective solutions and prepare plans to eliminate or minimize water quality problems related to silvicultural activities. Working knowledge of the scientific principles and application of Forestry BMPs. Understanding of the Administrative Process Act. Forest management field experience with Appalachian Forest types. Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with a variety of individuals and agencies. Leadership experience and desire to mentor new employees. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet procedural deadlines. Physically fit and able to traverse on foot different types of forested terrain over an extended period of time in all kinds of weather conditions. Possesses valid driver's license and willing to travel around the State and stay overnight on occasion. Experience with personal computers, Microsoft Office software, and GPS units.

Additional Considerations

Experience with Virginia's Sharp Logging Program. Minimum of 3+ years technical forestry experience.

Must be able to obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of employment. As a responder on wildfires, must be willing and able to be on-call during Spring and Fall fire seasons. Must pass moderate physical fitness test, per Federal guidelines. The test consists of walking 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25-pound pack. Selected candidate is required to pass a criminal background check and a drug test
