Job Duties

Fundraising

  • Manages a portfolio of 75-100 donors, corporate partners, and prospects, focusing on soliciting and closing major gifts/sponsorships at the $25,000+ level for all University programs, to include special gifts, and leadership-level annual gifts.
  • Identify and qualify prospects, engage and cultivate current and prospective donors, and steward donors.
  • Meet a goal of 10-15 face-to-face visits per month, deliver 24 major gift proposals, and deliver 75-100 annual proposals. Increase portfolio giving at a rate of 10% per year.• Prepare compelling proposals and collateral materials to secure philanthropic investments.
  • Log metric and contact information into the University donor system (Blackbaud).
  • Motivate administrators, staff, and volunteers to participate in the development process and solicitation of gifts.
  • Assists in the execution of special events and staffing of volunteer groups.
  • Oversee specific giving initiatives, events, and projects for donor acquisition, portfolio building, and donor participation.
  • Develop and sustain collaborative and supportive relationships with internal and external colleagues and prospects and maintain a positive and constructive attitude while solving problems.
  • Meet defined visit and solicitation goals and work closely with Deans, faculty, volunteers, and other stakeholders to achieve those goals.
  • Independently prioritize tasks set in consultation with supervisors
  • Maintain moves management tracking within Raiser’s Edge to ensure donor interactions are documented and create monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect caseload activity and performance.
  • Develop knowledge of and articulate the mission of Norfolk State University, its various academic programs, and fundraising objectives to prospects and donors.
  • Represent the Advancement Office at University, community, and professional events, meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Submit progress reports and attend staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree; a Master’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors resulting in $25,000+ gifts.
  • Minimum 5 years of fundraising leadership experience is required.
  • A driven, self-starter who exhibits intellectual curiosity, is goal-oriented, and can effectively build trust and establish partnerships with a diverse group of individuals and personalities.
  • Excellent user of office technology and information systems (including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint) and donor databases, preferably Raiser’s Edge. Familiarity with a “moves management” donor tracking system.
  • Ability to handle situations calmly and efficiently ranging from routine to highly complex.
  • Demonstrated experience in higher education or not-for-profit organizational management, operational administration, and business administration or other relevant area.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work successfully in a fast-paced environment with a high degree of attention to detail and minimum supervision.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and to handle multiple relationship situations simultaneously and navigate through a complex and multi-level organization.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adjust to a dynamic University work environment.
  • Ability to travel and work evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the complexities of an urban university and the ability to represent its goals to multiple constituents persuasively.

Additional Considerations

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Frequent in and out of state travel with some weekend and evening responsibilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Regularly sits at a desk or computer workstation.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
