Job Duties

Position contributes to the agency’s public safety mission by providing supervision and monitoring of probationers from Courts and the Parole Board in accordance with DOC standards; to enhance public safety through supervision, follow-up, and the use of community resources, and commitment or re-commitment if necessary. Supervises a specialized caseload of sex offenders, performs investigations, case management, and administrative services.

Probation Officers participate in Virginia Law Officers’ Retirement System (VaLORS), which is a defined benefit plan with enhanced benefits for hazardous duty. VaLORS participants are eligible to retire at age 60 with five years of creditable service or as early as age 50 with 25 years of creditable service. A reduced benefit is available at age 50 with five years of creditable service.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience as a sex offender supervision specialist in a Probation & Parole District. Considerable experience of sex offender treatment methods, social casework, and supervision with sexual offenders. Working knowledge of civil commitment laws and conditional release supervision in the community. Demonstrated experience and competence with GPS installation and monitoring. Demonstrated ability to lead the work of other professional staff; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to interact with offenders and the public; to organize and implement casework services; to initiate independent actions and carry out assignments with minimal supervision; to intervene in crisis situations; and to develop and maintain good interagency relationships. Skilled in interviewing, gathering & interpreting info to assess needed services & requirements.

Additional Considerations

Advanced Knowledge in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Sociology/Social Work, Criminology, Administration of Justice and Public Safety or related field. Completed the required academy courses for a sex offender supervision specialist. Knowledge of Evidenced Based Practices, current sex offender treatment methodology, and knowledgeable of the post-conviction sex offender polygraph. Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
