About the Agency: 

The Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) provides services and resources which enable Virginians who are blind, vision-impaired, or deafblind to achieve their desired levels of employment, education, and personal independence. This is achieved by offering individualized rehabilitation services to eligible consumers and technical assistance and support to businesses, professionals, and families.

Job Duties:

The Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) is currently seeking applicants for the position of security coordinator. The incumbent in this position will carry out the following duties, which include scheduling shifts and maintaining adequate manpower: ensure performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur; provide training as needed to maintain an efficient, professional, and responsive staff; ensure the performance planning and evaluation system is met; and complete evaluations by established deadlines with proper documentation. The incumbent is responsible for unlocking and securing buildings according to established schedules and during approved events. Maintains a written log of all activities and incidents while on duty; Documents safety hazards by reporting any visible repairs/hazards by submitting a written request to DBVI Maintenance; Performs fire safety drills and other fire safety inspections as assigned, occasionally after hours; Assists with student and staff fire prevention training; Remains available to respond to the fire alarm and access to the fire department upon arrival. This position is considered essential personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of principles and practices of public safety and security services
• Knowledge of fire and safety regulations, and related equipment
• Ability to interpret and apply safety and security regulations and react appropriately in emergencies.
• Ability to train others in security and safety-related areas
• Ability to work independently, exhibiting a high level of independence
• Knowledge of records management procedures sufficient to prepare and maintain accurate records for mandated retention, investigations, evidence, confidentiality, and court testimony.
• Ability to use computers and telecommunications equipment, including word processing, databases, electronic mail, fire alarm systems, and security alarm systems.
• Must be willing to work various shifts, respond to calls, emails, and texts after hours minimally to accommodate agency/department needs, which may include weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to respond to various situations calmly and to treat all personnel, visitors, clients, and contractors civilly and courteously.
• Physical requirements: Ability to lift 45-100 pounds, perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, running, bending, and climbing on various rough surfaces/terrain, and tolerate various chemicals and weather conditions.
• Ability to operate small power-related equipment.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required for entry into position:

Obtain a Virginia Unarmed Security Registration from the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Candidates who do not currently hold this certification must meet the criteria for certification, including criminal clearance history requirements, a minimum age requirement of 18 years, and completion of a DCJS-approved course within 90 days of employment.

Possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.

Current certification in First Aid and CPR, or agree to obtain certification within one year.

Additional Considerations:

Prior experience in the Military, Law Enforcement, or Security preferred.
