Job Duties

This position analyzes, researches, and investigates alleged regulatory and unlicensed violations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (the Department). The successful candidate will possess the ability to accurately analyze complaints associated with applicable standards of conduct, statutes, and licensure requirements; recommend appropriate outcomes based upon the collection of information and its comparison with applicable regulations and statutes; prepare factual, accurate, grammatically correct, and detailed written reports; successfully manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing priorities; and present findings in Department Informal Fact-Finding conferences, courts, and to other staff members—all of the above being accomplished in a timely fashion.

This position is located at the Department’s main office in Henrico County, Virginia; however, occasional overnight statewide travel may be necessary.

As part of The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you will play a critical role in the economic vitality of Virginia by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields. DPOR is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state laws and regulations.

TELEWORK OPTIONS: Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 90 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience completing investigations as demonstrated by prior investigative or professional experience in conducting thorough interviews and research and applying analytical skills
• Experience effectively collecting, comprehending, and verifying information through interviews and other sources with a preference for the Department’s investigative practices or previous state or local government administrative investigations practices
• Experience accurately interpreting complex regulations and statutes
• Experience comparing, and appropriately applying, information collected to complex regulations and statutes and recommending appropriate outcomes based upon internal procedures
• Experience accurately documenting findings in accordance with policy and procedure
• Strong oral and written communication skills and proofreading skills
• Experience effectively utilizing Microsoft Office and Adobe products with preference for intradepartmental software programs and databases
• Experience performing and completing assignments accurately and independently with limited supervision
• Excellent organizational skills to include experience successfully managing a regular caseload with multiple ongoing activities and tasks
• Commitment to customer service with the ability to effectively and appropriately interact with the general public, Department staff, and members of other departments and agencies

Additional Considerations

*Equivalent work experience with Public Administration, Public Policy, Criminal Justice, or similarly related field preferred.

*Experience investigating, analyzing, and documenting findings regarding regulatory matters and/or working in a detailed investigations environment with progressive responsibility is desirable.

*The successful candidate will be required to pass a national fingerprint-based background check.
