Job Duties

The Certified Nurse Practitioner Sr. role performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. This position also requires routine travel between offices in the district. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients
• Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation
• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs

Additional Considerations

• All actions and decisions as Nurse Practitioner will be within limits defined by the Nurse Practice Act of Virginia, the Regulations Governing the Certification of Nurse Practitioners and the Practice Agreement for Prescriptive Authority. Within these limits, the NP will make diagnoses, prescribe treatments and drug therapy and refer patients to appropriate department practitioners or outside specialists as warranted. The NP consults with the physician if a condition is deemed to be beyond the NP’s scope of practice. The NP will also seek consultation in situations where experience and knowledge is limited or before undertaking an unfamiliar activity.
• Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred
• Knowledge and skills that promote strong teamwork, including conflict management, and engagement of healthcare team members in process improvement planning and implementation.
• Ability to seek out and utilize community resources to address unmet needs.
