Virginia’s award-winning state park system, a division of DCR, boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Our parks encompass over 75,000 acres, offering campsites, cabins, trails, shorelines, lakes and ponds, international dark sky sites, and over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

Lake Anna State Park features a beautiful beach on one of Virginia’s most popular lakes, a fishing pond, a bathhouse and concessions complex, and a boat launch. The park offers stunning lake views and over 15 miles of trails suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The visitor center includes exhibits that explore the area’s gold mining history and highlight the park’s natural features. 

As Park Manager, you will:

  • Direct personnel, operations, and expenditures in the operation of Lake Anna State Park providing for programs and services to ensure visitor expectations are met and the park’s natural, historical, and cultural resources are protected for future generations.
  • Ensure department, division, and park support through civic activities, media relations, and interaction with other governmental officers and/or agencies.
  • Manage compliance with regulatory agencies for health and safety and provide intra-agency resources for the advancement of the Agency’s mission.

This will be a non-law enforcement position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating with and leading individuals, small groups, and work units in park operations and public settings.
  • Knowledge of business management, budget planning, and revenue generation.
  • Experience coordinating seasonal work programs and scheduling to maintain park services with minimal disruption to visitor use.
  • Experience with custodial, building, facility, grounds, and systems that may impact public safety and/or customer service.
  • Knowledge of conservation, preservation, and restoration practices for natural, cultural, historical, or recreational assets.
  • Knowledge of interpretation and public relations in a park and/or natural, cultural, or recreational operational setting.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience managing park operations with multiple revenue streams, including budget oversight and income forecasting tied to park services and programs.
  • Knowledge or experience of capital development planning in a park or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of program and educational outreach development in interpreting cultural and historical resources.
  • Knowledge and implementation experience of park policies and rules that directly impact visitors.
  • Demonstrated experience managing formal partnerships with Friends groups, foundations, or similar nonprofit or community organizations.
  • Knowledge of specialized park facilities including their operations.

The Park Manager position requires shift work, which includes weekends and holidays. As a Park Manager, you will be required to wear state-issued uniforms and use state-issued equipment. Work is performed in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, dust, animals, and insects. Park Manager's will perform manual labor including standing, bending, pulling, climbing, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Successful candidate will be required to obtain First Aid, CPR certifications within 12 months of employment.

PARK HOUSING WILL BE OPTIONAL FOR THIS POSITION. If chosen by the incumbent, the following will apply: In accordance with 10.1-109.B of the code of Virginia, this position is required to reside in Department-controlled housing for the purposes of providing security and operational efficiencies to the property of the Department. The incumbent must enter into a lease agreement and demonstrate possession of liability and personal property insurance.

Selected candidate(s) for positions within Virginia State Parks will be required to satisfactorily complete a criminal history background check. A valid driver's license is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
