Eastern State Hospital (ESH), located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state-of-the-art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH invites applications for the position of part-time MEDICAL LABORATORY TECH (HEALTH CARE TECH II) – PRN.
This position will provide laboratory analysis to clinicians and perform phlebotomy testing, on a part-time basis for coverage purposes. The successful candidate will have practical and theoretical knowledge and skills in clinical medicine to include phlebotomy; understanding of physiological disease processes and the impact of laboratory results in diagnosis and treatment; the ability to make technically sound decisions that ensure the accurate interpretation, recording and communication of laboratory test results to physicians and other medical staff; practical computer skills and understanding of instrumentation/LIS interfaces; and understanding of quality control practices and their importance to the overall functioning of the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate with an associate or bachelor’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science. A bachelor’s degree in a science or health-related field (e.g. chemistry or microbiology) may also be considered.
Technician or technologist that meets the minimum requirements for working in a high complexity laboratory as determined by federal CLIA regulations.
Additional Considerations
Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science and successful completion of a certified laboratory program.
Completing a clinical laboratory program or internship through a hospital-based program or as part of their education.
National certification as a medical technologist (MT), clinical laboratory scientist (CLS), or medical laboratory scientist (MLS).
Previous Experience in a hospital laboratory.

This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. All ESH positions may be required to work different shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays, and/or overtime as requested, in the event of an emergency.

This position is a hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
