The Science Museum of Virginia is looking for a dynamic educator and key player to serve as a Community Programs Generalist on our Education Department.
In this exciting role, you'll work closely with the Assistant Director of Education for Community Programs and the Education Experience Coordinator to develop and deliver hands-on, engaging science content for some of our most popular programs—Science After Dark, Earth Day, Summer Camp, Camp-Ins, Science on Tap, and more. You'll also support the Community Engagement Coordinator by helping bring the museum experience beyond our walls through community outreach events. As a cross-trained team member, you'll have the opportunity to dive into exhibition interpretation, deliver Science on a Sphere presentations, and assist with Dome operations, ensuring a well-rounded and impactful role.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a strong enthusiasm for teaching and a genuine passion for engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to effectively interact with the general public, school groups, staff, and volunteers. Experience working with multiple age groups in informal educational settings is essential, and prior experience with children from low-income or at-risk populations is a plus. The ideal candidate will also possess strong organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills; be flexible, patient, and resourceful; and have the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment is important, as is the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience delivering STEM-based classes, workshops, demonstrations, and activities is required, along with exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage a wide range of audiences.
Additional Considerations
Experience or a strong interest in science, education, or a related field is a plus. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in a science center or similar setting, particularly those who have demonstrated progressive responsibility. Experience in planning, developing, writing, and implementing informal educational activities is highly valued. Familiarity with distance learning platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet is important, as is the ability to effectively use G Suite (or similar applications) for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations. A valid driver's license is a plus, and fluency in a second language is highly desirable.
