Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) is seeking a dynamic and results-driven Deputy Director of Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) to serve as a strategic leader within the Veterans Education, Transition & Employment (VETE) division. This position is critical to shaping, implementing, and expanding specialized programs that support Virginia’s most underrepresented military-connected communities.
The Deputy Director will oversee and drive key initiatives, including:
• Women Veterans Programs
• Military Spouse Support Services
• Specialized Gap-Filling Initiatives aligned with gubernatorial priorities
As a member of the VETE leadership team, the Deputy Director will play a central role in advancing DVS’ mission through strategic alignment, program development, and cross-sector collaboration with public and private stakeholders.
What You’ll Do:
• Lead and direct complex service line operations and personnel
• Manage strategic, budgetary, administrative, and human resources functions
• Develop and scale programs to address service gaps for women veterans, military spouses, and underserved SMVF populations
• Provide high-level accountability for execution of executive and gubernatorial initiatives
• Cultivate partnerships across government agencies, community groups, and veteran-serving organizations
• Champion innovation and organizational effectiveness
• Communicate clearly and credibly with internal and external stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
•Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with colleagues, decision-makers, and internal and external stakeholders with confidence, composure, credibility, and connection.
•Experience leading and directing complex and/or multiple programs with supervision of all levels of personnel.
•Managing and directing the service line level strategic, administrative, human resources, and budgetary actions.
•Experience working with diverse constituent groups (business owners, state/local/federal government officials and organizations, veteran service organizations (community groups, boards, etc.).
•Experience in identifying target population needs, monitoring programs, evaluating overall program performance, implementing policies and procedures.
