Job Duties
Under supervision of the Statewide Detection Lieutenant, and Special Operations, provide direct and daily supervision and guidance to K-9 Narcotic/Contraband Interdiction and Bloodhound Man trailing Units in order to prevent narcotics, cell phones, tobacco and other illegal or unauthorized substances from entering correctional facilities. Provides a duty roster and work schedule for the Divisional K-9 Teams and complete monthly reports and all other required documentation related to the K-9 Teams and the K-9 Program. May be required to train, care, and handle assigned canine as needed. Assists other law enforcement agencies as requested. Will be required to complete and maintain K-9 Training and Certifications and conduct monthly assessments of K-9 Teams. May be requested to assist with the Basic Training and Operational needs of the K-9 Operations Unit. Maintain a good relationship and open and effectively communicate with the Special Operations Unit, investigation units, intelligence unit, institutional staff, and all regional administrators
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Virginia License. K-9 Certification. Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections policies, procedures, and practices. Demonstrated skill as a canine handler (training, care, and utilization). Working knowledge of the criminal justice system, basic investigatory techniques, and standard methods of evidence gathering, seizure and control. Ability to organize, plan, schedule and implement detailed and complex assignments; to work effectively with the general public, staff, inmates, and other law enforcement agencies. Demonstrated ability to maintain composure in stressful situations, make responsible, honest, fair, impartial, and consistent decisions. Strong interpersonal and written communication, analytical, and leadership skills.
Additional Considerations
Certified Canine Handler for at least three (3) years. DCJS General Instructor Certification. K-9 Adjunct Instructor. Working knowledge of all canine disciplines and canine policy. Prefer education, training, or experience as a supervisor or manager. Demonstrated ability to gather data and produce written reports using a computer. General Instructor Certified. Previous supervisory experience. Valid Operator's License with valid driving privileges in the State of Virginia. DCJS General Instructor Certification, K-9 Certification, K-9 Adjunct Instructor. - Computer proficient - Work document, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
