Description of Duties
The Director of Finance is a member of the Executive Leadership Team, which is responsible for developing the overarching strategy of the institution, in collaboration with the Board of Regents of Gunston Hall. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will take ownership of planning, organizing, and managing all accounting and budgeting activities for Gunston Hall and its affiliates. The incumbent will provide critical financial insight through accurate data compilation, trend forecasting, and rigorous compliance with GAAP, Commonwealth of Virginia policies, and best practices in non-profit financial management.

Roles and Responsibilities
Serve as the chief financial officer for the organization:
• Manage all financial operations of the organization which includes both state and foundation funds.
• Complete all non-profit and governmental reporting and compliance requirements.
• Monitor internal and control activities for compliance, makes recommendations for improvements, and conducts periodic reviews.
• Support and complete all private and public audit and tax filing processes in coordination with Board(s), staff, and auditors.
• Recommend and implement policies and strategies that ensure the organization’s financial resiliency and strength.
Prepare, manage, and oversee state and foundation budgets for the organization:
• Prepare and present an annual operating budget to the Executive Director and associated Boards for approval.
• Implement, manage, and execute operating budgets
• Prepare monthly and ad hoc financial statements and reports for all budgets and financial metrics.
Perform accounting functions for the organization:
• Enter bank deposits in Cardinal and QuickBooks and enters deposits on cash receipt log.
• Reconcile transactions keyed in the state accounting system (Cardinal) and QuickBooks
• Reconcile and enter transactions into Fixed Assets and Lease Accounting systems
• Process invoices in Cardinal and QuickBooks, verifying accuracy through established audit procedures/policies.
• Prepare checks in QuickBooks for vendor payments.
Minimum Qualifications
We are seeking an individual possessing the following:
• Comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted business and accounting principles, and of fiscal and accounting functions, policies, and procedures for both non-profit organizations and governmental agencies.
• Considerable knowledge of non-profit and public audit and compliance protocols and processes.
• Considerable knowledge of accounting software and associated systems.
• Ability to apply knowledge of information technology systems and financial management processes to choose, customize, configure, and administer financial management software applications.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, manage, and coordinate accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting functions, systems, and procedures including internal controls and cash receipting.
• Ability to create, analyze and forecast financial data, make sound recommendations, and to develop and implement policies and procedures.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, governing bodies, partners, and agencies of Commonwealth government.
• Proven ability developing and achieving goals, planning and managing projects, implementing budgets and business plans, and meeting targeted deadlines.
Specific Qualifications for this position include:
• Considerable experience planning, organizing, and directing financial operations at a complex organization, including non-profit/associations with multiple funding sources.
• Progressive, relevant experience and demonstrated success in budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning, financial management and reporting, and compliance assurance with non-profits and governmental agencies, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
• Experience in a senior leadership position, or progressive experience in leadership and management roles.
Additional Considerations
• Knowledge and experience with cultural organizations, museums, or historic sites as well as non-profits and/or associations.
• Working knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia budget processes.
• Considerable knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia accounting processes and demonstrated ability to manage state general and non-general fund revenue, appropriations and expenditures, and private, foundation, and governmental grants

Owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and operated by the Gunston Hall Board of Regents, Gunston Hall’s mission is to stimulate the exploration and understanding of the principles expressed by George Mason in the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a National Historic Landmark, Gunston Hall was built from 1755-1759. The almost 6000-acre plantation was the home of George and Ann Mason, their children, and hundreds of enslaved people, indentured servants, wageworkers, and tenant farmers. This position is full-time, salaried, and classified as exempt. Compensation will be based on qualifications, with an expected hiring range of up to $120,000. The incumbent receives Commonwealth of Virginia state employee benefits. Specific information about benefits is available online.
