Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region—and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.

RBC is seeking a detail-oriented and highly motivated Accountant to join our Finance team. The Accountant plays a vital role in supporting the College’s mission of delivering an exceptional student experience by ensuring financial operations are conducted with accuracy, integrity, and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Apply knowledge of accounting, auditing principles, and business practices to support financial operations.
• Analyze financial data and apply professional standards to perform tasks of routine to moderate complexity.
• Research, investigate, reconcile, and evaluate financial information to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Clearly communicate financial concepts, policies, and procedures both verbally and in writing.
• Work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
• Utilize mathematical skills to process and interpret a variety of financial transactions and records.
• Ensure adherence to GAAP, accounting principles, and budgeting practices.
• Leverage advanced Excel capabilities and strong analytical skills to support financial reporting and analysis.
• Manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining attention to detail in all financial documentation and processes.
• Perform and assist with reconciliations for appropriations, expenditures, revenues, cash, fixed assets, bank accounts, and subsidiary ledgers.
• Prepare month-end schedules and resolve reconciling items independently.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes.
• Compile and analyze financial data for management reporting.
• Ensure compliance with CAPP Manual, GAAP, GASB, institutional policies, and applicable regulations.
• Serve as backup to the Senior Accountant for fixed asset financial records.
• Collaborate with departments on the acquisition and disposal of fixed assets.
• Assist with annual inventory and maintain required documentation.
• Review departmental budget submissions for accuracy and completeness.
• Support periodic budget reporting and assist with Performance Budgeting System transactions.
• Conduct account analysis and prepare journal entries using professional judgment.
• Compile and organize journal entries and supporting documentation across multiple systems.
• Maintain accurate financial records and ensure proper transaction recording.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of accounting policies and procedures.
• Ensure timely and accurate processing of journal entries.

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrated general accounting experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP
• Experience with reconciliations, budgets, reporting, and auditing
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, specifically Excel
• Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and auditing functions or principles, general business practices, and/or applicable computer systems.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required
