Job Duties

Applicants hired in this position receive a 10% Special Pay incentive for as long as they are an employee performing the duties of a Tower Technician or Tower Specialist. Employees will be compensated with an incentive amounting to 10% of the salary paid on a semi-monthly basis and if the employee changes positions or discontinues performance as a Tower Technician or Tower Specialist, the incentive will be discontinued effective the date the duties change or are discontinued.

About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Radio Tower Specialist in our Communications Division in Salem, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:

• Planning, scheduling and supervising the inspection and maintenance of microwave and base station antennas, transmission lines, obstruction lighting systems, emergency power plants, fuel supplies, and related equipment.
• Overseeing the inspection, repair, and maintenance work performed by tower crew and outside contractors.
• Maintaining records related to antennas, antenna support structures, emergency power plants, radio repeater buildings and associated equipment.
• Maintaining records of all work assignments and tasks with their completion dates for performance and administrative evaluation.
• Supervising assigned staff by establishing priorities, evaluating performance, assessing developmental needs, and correcting substandard performance and discipline issues as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

• Of repair, maintenance, and installation of propane, fuel systems and associated equipment, diesel emergency power plants, and associated switch gear.
• Of electricity and the operation of electrical test equipment.
• Of safe practices and safety regulations/requirements.
• Of supervisory principles and practices.
• Of antenna system operation, technologies, and installation on towers and associated structures.

Skills:

• In the use of power tools such as electric welder, metal lathe, acetylene torch, transit, drill press, general carpentry tools, and similar equipment.

Abilities:

• To read and interpret blueprints and specifications for communications towers and related equipment.
• To plan, schedule and supervise the work of others.
• To work independently and as a member of a team.
• To form effective relationships with co-workers, general public, and other Department personnel.
• To transport and handle bulky equipment in the field.
• To maintain detailed schedules, service and inventory records, and prepare reports.
• To communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
• To work rotating shifts.
• To respond to calls for emergency service on a 24-hour basis, when necessary, to establish, restore, or prevent service outages.
• To climb heights of 400 feet.
• To lift 50 pounds without assistance.

• Experience in tower construction, antenna installation, and inspection and maintenance of related equipment at a supervisory level.
• Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License.
• National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) approved competent climber, advanced climber and tower rescue certification.
• Continued employment contingent upon successful completion and maintenance of National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) approved competent climber.
• Must weigh less than 280 pounds, and have a waist girth no greater than 60 inches.
• Extensive overnight travel throughout the state required
• Must live within 90 minutes of Division 6 Headquarters located at 3775 W. Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.
• Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

• First aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred.
