Job Duties

The Chesapeake Health Department (CHD) is currently seeking a qualified registered nurse to join its clinic team as a Public Health Nurse, Senior (PHN, Sr.). This pivotal role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, focused on assessments, delivering essential screenings, testing, evaluations, treatment and case management services for mandated and other public health clinical programs. Clinic services include, but are not limited to immunization, sexually transmitted infections, breast and cervical cancer screenings, as well as potential cross-coverage to other community-based services. This PHN Sr. will also be integral to re-establishing family planning and women’s health services to the district.

Collaboration is key in this role, the PHN. Sr works closely with various individuals, groups and families to strategize and implement health improvement programs tailored to meet the unique needs of the community. Thes programs may encompass health education initiatives, outreach efforts, and community engagement activities designed to promote a healthier Chesapeake.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by Federal Grants. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications

•Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR, able to be fit tested and perform fit testing for other staff in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) [Ref.2] regulations
•Experience functioning in a leadership role; experience and ability to function independently in the home/clinic/community/school settings and prioritize workload
•Exercises sound nursing judgment; effective verbal, written, interpersonal/physical assessment skills
•Experience and ability to enter, review, analyze data and statistics and produce reports and/or recommendations from such information; ability to work in a fast paced, data driven environment
•Experience and knowledge of nursing process, health maintenance, disease processes, physical and behavioral sciences, case management process and basic principles of epidemiology
•Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team
•Knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications; including Internet, Microsoft Office, and Google Mail applications
•Experience and ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds
•May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
•Excellent communication, data interpretation and computer skills
•Must be able to demonstrate decision making skills, teaching, interviewing, counseling skills and the ability to analyze problems/situations and problem solve

Additional Considerations

•Public health experience
•If working with the EPI response team, Certified in Infection Control (CIC) preferred and experience in hospital or long-term care facility infection control
