Job Duties

Provides sound leadership to public safety personnel in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for the individuals we serve, for staff, and for visitors. Responsibilities include the oversight of the fire and safety program and has responsibility to impact and improve the occupational safety and emergency management programs. Actively participates on committees as requested, develops and conducts training, and assists in the development, monitoring, and amendment of safety and security policies/procedures.

DCJS certified in law enforcement. Ability to interact with staff, visitors, and patients in a busy behavioral health care environment. Ability to assimilate information and make sound decisions in emergency situations. Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability to provide leadership/direction to staff, who in turn work independently after receipt of instruction. Ability to recruit and select new personnel, and transfer knowledge of the department skills required to train personnel and measure effectiveness of training. Strongly prefer extensive knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia and DBHDS Code, statute, rules, regulations, etc. as well as accreditation and regulatory requirements related to staff and patient safety.

Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

* High School Diploma or GED
* Valid Driver’s License

Additional Considerations

* Ability to be sworn as Special Police/Conservator of the Peace for the County of Smyth by the Circuit Court.
