Job Duties

Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI) is a 134-bed state psychiatric hospital located in Northern Virginia, a suburb conveniently located near several public transportation routes and in close proximity to Washington, DC. Currently, more than half of our population is forensically involved.
We are seeking an organized, detail-oriented, and dependable person to join our dynamic team. As a Pre-Trial Coordinator and Forensic Mental Health Specialist Supervisor, the incumbent will work closely with the Director of Psychology and Forensic Services, the Forensic Evaluator, and court personnel, such as judges, attorneys, and court clerks to support operations of the Office of Forensic Services at NVMHI and provision of care.
Duties include but are not limited to supervising FMHS staff; serving as subject matter expert and providing consultation to treatment teams working with individuals with pre-trial legal status; managing communications and information flow between the hospital, courts, attorneys, law enforcement, and related agencies for individuals with pre-trial forensic legal status; ensuring pre-trial databases, forensic correspondence, and notification systems are in place and effective; preparing and submitting required court documents and evaluations within deadlines; processing admission packets; and, maintaining protected health information in compliance with regulations. The incumbent will also be responsible for obtaining court orders and criminal history records as needed, tracking evaluation data, and providing timely, meaningful information to support clinical decision-making and treatment planning. The incumbent may also provide secondary coverage for Director of Psychology and Forensic Services, Pre-Trial Administrative Assistant, Forensic Services Liaison, and Psychology Supervisor.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in fast-paced environments.
• Proficiency in managing databases and electronic recordkeeping systems to ensure accurate, accessible, and up-to-date information.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Skilled in interacting effectively with forensic clientele, legal representatives, mental health professionals, and decision-making bodies.
• Knowledge of relevant Virginia Code sections pertaining to forensic populations.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities for addressing complex administrative and information management tasks.
• Demonstrated capacity to handle sensitive information with discretion and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.


Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of best practices in mental health treatment, including evidenced-based treatment approaches
• Demonstrated knowledge of program development, including assessment and monitoring to ensure positive outcomes
• Demonstrated experience providing supervision
• Specialized education and/or training in forensic psychology
• Graduation from an American Psychological Association accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology
• Completion of APA accredited internship or internship with membership in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers
• Virginia license to serve as a Clinical Psychologist
• Successful completion of approved training by the Commissioner of the DBHDS to
conduct court-ordered and Commissioner-appointed evaluations

Additional Considerations

• Previous experience in inpatient settings and knowledge of forensic mental health
treatment
• Demonstrated capacity to handle sensitive information with discretion and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
• Familiarity with relevant ethical and professional standards of practice in an inpatient setting
