About Us:
The Division of Legislative Services (DLS) is a legislative branch agency created by the General Assembly to provide nonpartisan legal, general research, and support services to members of the General Assembly, the standing committees of the House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia, and certain legislative commissions.
Position Overview:
As a proofreader, you will be responsible for identifying grammatical, typographical, and compositional errors in legislative drafts. You will correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and content errors quickly and accurately while maintaining consistency with the Code of Virginia's style and established guidelines. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Identify and correct grammatical, typographical, and compositional errors in legislative drafts.
- Ensure all documents adhere to the Code of Virginia’s style and established guidelines.
- Monitor the consistency of content across documents.
- Perform additional proofreading tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of the difference between editing and rewriting.
- Ability to learn the specifics of legislative editing.
- Customer service-oriented with excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
- Ability to work diligently, both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to learn from constructive feedback and continuously seek improvement.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
- Technically savvy.
Education:
- A degree in English, Linguistics, Journalism, Writing, Communications, Arts, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, including freelance work.
- Demonstrated success in working in a deadline-driven environment.

This is a contract, remote position with a defined start and end date and does not include health or retirement benefits.
