The Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) work to reduce the communication barriers between persons who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families and the professionals who serve them.
Job Duties:
The Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) is seeking a motivated individual to serve as an Interpreter Services Coordinator. The individual in this role will be responsible for responding to and coordinating interpreter and CART service requests from the Virginia Court System, Virginia State Agencies, and other government entities as appropriate. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, providing coordination, scheduling, and referral of qualified interpreters/CART service in a professional and timely manner, using independent decision-making skills as necessary and appropriate. Offers information and guidance regarding effective communication and the use of interpreters to state agencies and private businesses and creates informational materials regarding the services available. Other duties and responsibilities include the following: prepare vouchers for payments based on the details provided in the request form and submit them for payment in accordance with established VDDHH and state policies and procedures; maintain and update the Directory of Qualified Interpreters to reflect any changes or additions, as well as update the performance levels of the interpreters listed in the directory; Respond to emails, phone calls, or visits promptly, accurately, and courteously, providing explanations of agency services and general information and referrals.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Considerable knowledge of deaf culture and the communication requirements of people who are deaf and hard of hearing, specifically in interpreting needs and services.
• Demonstrated ability in accurate data entry, data management, and detail-oriented tasks.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently in support of agency and program priorities, work scheduled days/hours, and work in a team environment
• Understand and appropriately apply established policies and procedures to individual situations; in unique or special situations, research and recommend/implement appropriate problem resolution, and adapt to change
• Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and sign language communication skills with a diverse customer base. American Sign Language fluency required.
• Professional experience delivering programs for deaf, hard of hearing, and/or deafblind individuals.
• Professional experience providing administrative support.
• American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) evaluation at Level 2+ or equivalent is required for the position.
