As an Assistant Facilities Director, you’ll lead a skilled team across multiple trades, manage important construction and renovation projects, and ensure our facility remains safe, efficient, and compliant. This is a great opportunity to combine hands-on knowledge with supervisory experience while contributing to an environment that supports both staff and patients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing, supervising, and supporting staff across multiple trades, primarily HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, but can also include carpentry, automotive/fleet, and grounds.
  • Managing construction, renovation, and maintenance projects, from planning and design to completion, ensuring compliance with all codes and safety standards.

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches to guide project planning and execution.

  • Accurately estimating materials, equipment, and labor costs, and monitoring budgets for assigned projects.

  • Communicating effectively with staff, contractors, inspectors, vendors, and regulatory agencies to ensure smooth operations and compliance.

  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and performing or directing mechanical repairs to facility systems and equipment.

  • Ensuring compliance with DHRM, DBHDS, OSHA, NFPA, DEQ, BCOM, Virginia Fire Codes, and emergency response requirements.

  • Supporting departmental budgeting processes and maintaining accurate records for materials, labor, and costs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance for a state facility, including knowledge of the various trades involved established standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of management of construction/renovation projects.
  • Skill in the use of and reading blueprints, sketches, etc.
  • Ability to estimate accurately the material, equipment, and budget needed to complete a
    job.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff.
  • Project and service contractors, inspectors and vendors.
  • This position requires working knowledge of DHRM, DBHDS, OSHA General Industry Standards, NFPA, DEQ, and BCOM requirements.
  • Must also be conversant in Virginia Fire Codes, Hazardous Material Handling, and Emergency Response Planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and make mechanical repairs, to facility equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise others.
  • Knowledge of departmental budgeting process.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience as a maintenance manager/supervisor in any of the building/maintenance trades listed; HVAC, plumbing & electrical required.
  • Certification in one trade required, with knowledge of other trades necessary for maintaining a state facility preferred.
  • Experience interacting with residents/patients within an institutional environment
    preferred.
  • Experience in providing supervision and/or training to residents preferred.
  • Experience supervising and training others in trades is preferred.
  • Experience in troubleshooting all mechanical aspects of the building preferred.
