Job Duties

Norfolk State University’s Police Department invites applicants for the position of Dispatcher/Emergency Coordinator I. The Emergency Coordinator performs a variety of communication and operational duties in support of public safety to the University community. The successful candidate will:

1. Prioritize all emergencies and non-emergency calls received and appropriately disseminate request for routine assistance and emergency services.
2. Monitor all audio and video surveillance equipment, operate the Virginia Criminal Information Network and the National Crime Information Center computer terminal and two way hand-held radios.
3. This position is considered essential personnel which means that the successful candidate will be required to come to work or be called in to work in cases of emergency, inclement weather or other staff shortages on all shifts. 
Must be able to Work 12 hour shifts

Minimum Qualifications

1. Basic knowledge of work activities of a Police Department/Law Enforcement agency.
2. Skilled in keyboarding and use of Microsoft Office Suite.
3. Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends.
4. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
5. Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
6. Experienced in dealing with the public and working in an office setting.
7. Must be able to obtain Basic Dispatcher certification within one year of hire.
8. High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.
9. Skilled in the use of communication equipment including two-way transmitter, computer systems, and video surveillance equipment.

Additional Considerations

1. Previous experience with Law Enforcement regulations to include incident reports and crime classifications.
2. Certification as a Certified Emergency Coordinator, or ability to complete course within 6 months or less of employment.
3. Previous experience and certification in the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Network systems (VCIN) or ability to obtain certification.
4. Previous experience with surveillance equipment.

Criminal History
1. Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals).
2. Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, including traffic violations, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last five (5) years.
3. Any conviction of Domestic Violence, including simple assault against a domestic or partner, spouse, child or parent.
4. Any individual falling into any of the aforementioned criminal history categories, prior to conviction, that enters a plea agreement or other form of sentencing disposition to the reduction of charges will be disqualified from the entry process.
5. Commission of undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature.


Traffic Violations
1. Five (5) or more negative points on a Virginia Operator’s License or the equivalent for out of state licenses, and/or two (2) moving violations in any state within the last twelve (12) months.
2. Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accident within the last five (5)
years.


Drugs
1. Any involvement or use in the sale, distribution, or possession of illegal drugs.
2. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last five (5) years.
3. Illegal possession of marijuana or a derivative thereof within the last twelve (12) months.
4. Illegal possession or use of heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens or any other schedule one (1) or two (2) drug, or any derivative thereof, as defined in the Code of Virginia within the last ten (10) years.
