Job Duties

Under the direction and guidance of the Office of Law Enforcement Services Unit Chief, the Assistant Chief leads and supervises a staff of Special Agent law enforcement professionals who conduct criminal investigations of statutory violations against or within the Department of Corrections by employees, inmates, contractors, volunteers, visitors or others, and administrative investigations of violations of the Standards of Conduct, and other investigations or inquiries of serious matters involving the Department. Ensures that all investigative work of assigned staff meets accepted professional standards, is timely and accurate. Responsible for development and implementation of prevention activities to reduce vulnerability of the Department to criminal activity.

Minimum Qualifications

Progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, investigations or security. Current active Virginia law enforcement certification by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and possession of a valid Virginia DMV Operator’s License. Considerable knowledge and experience with methods and techniques meeting legal and accepted professional standards in conducting complex criminal and administrative investigations. Working knowledge of applicable federal and state statutes and administrative policies. Knowledge of procedures used to identify, prepare, examine, analyze, and preserve items of evidence for criminal cases or administrative hearings. Ability to analyze and review investigations for completeness, accuracy, or legality. Working knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence. Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective relations with all levels of Department managers and personnel, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and the judiciary, citizens and the general public.

Additional Considerations

Advanced training and certifications for investigative interviews or evidence collection. Experience leading complex criminal and administrative investigations. Experience supervising Law Enforcement positions. Experience leading Dialogues and Learning Teams. Experience training new Special Agents and ability to serve on Applicant Interview Panels. Experience in Administration of Justice, Management or like field. DCJS or DOC Instructor Certifications such as Firearms, Defensive Tactics or OC Instructors.
