Job Duties
Hiram W. Davis Medical Center, located in Petersburg, Virginia, is a 94-bed medical facility providing acute medical diagnoses, skilled care, intermediate care, and long term care to individuals receiving services in DBHDS facilities and within the community that have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Admissions to HWDMC are generally either permanent placement or special hospitalization. Patients typically come to HWDMC as a special hospitalization for step-down to stabilize, post-surgery rehabilitation, or long-term care.
The Music Therapist will be responsible for providing music therapy, therapeutic and/or leisure activities for adult and geriatric intellectually disabled and psychiatric patients. Music Therapy will be conducted as scheduled and planned accordingly to residents' needs, interests and strengths.
~ Responsible for planning and developing clear treatment goals and objectives;
~ Encourage resident participation to their optimum level of performance;
~ Manage assigned caseload that include completion of treatment plans, progress notes, attendance records, RVUs, and other required documentation according to established guidelines and timeframes;
~ Keep accurate inventory of music therapy instruments;
~ Performs duties assigned by supervisor to assist in the daily flow of recreation department.
~ Assures integration of services by establishing collaborative practice with Nursing, Rehabilitative Services, Social Services and Staff Development Staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in Music Therapy, Recreation Therapy, or related field. Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC). Working knowledge of program management and the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of music therapy and of materials and equipment. Must have the ability to organize, coordinate, and implement therapeutic recreation programs relating to the special needs of the adult and geriatric psychiatric, intellectually disabled, and substance use population. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to stimulate and sustain interests of patients; to assess, evaluate, and report patient’s abilities. Ability to physically be able to perform the duties of the position including, bending, pushing, lifting up to fifty pounds, reaching, walking and verbalizing.
