Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated candidate to join the Department of Fiscal Services as a Staff Accountant. This position is responsible for completing journal entries, analyzing financial data, performing
financial data reconciliations and interface data reconciliations, and assisting with financial reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure accuracy of all financial transactions posted into both the statewide and internal accounting system
  • Prepare accounting work papers, assist with preparation of financial statements and other financial reports
  • Perform a full range of accounting functions in accordance with GAAP, federal, state and SCV policies and procedures
  • Advise users on SCV policies and practices
  • Support other accounting functions and projects as assigned
  • Respond to inquiries and provide excellent customer service
  • Research, reconcile, analyze and evaluate financial data and resolve problems

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to prepare journal entries and perform account reconciliations
  • Skill in analyzing financial data and the ability to manipulate a large amount of data with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to update/maintain spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and ability to interpret and apply financial standards in either a GASB or FASB environment
  • Excellent time management and organizational ability
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet constant deadlines and ability to communicate effectively

Additional Considerations

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP)
  • Experience in the use of automated accounting/financial systems
  • Associate degree or higher in accounting or related field
