About the Agency:

The Mission of the Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy is to intervene in the lives of 16-18 year old teenagers by providing the values, skills, education, and self-discipline needed to produce responsible, productive citizens, and to do so in a highly structured learning environment.

Purpose of Position:

Instruct and assist cadets in developing post-residential goals. Conduct various job skills
classes with cadets. Establish and maintain residential and post-residential case files. Communicate daily with program graduates and potential educational/vocational placement sources. Coordinate job/school related field trips throughout the state. Maintain automated data base systems and report/update data collected on a weekly and monthly basis. Assist in program mentor screening.

This is a part-time position and is ineligible for state benefits. This position is limited to working an average of 29 hours per week, not to exceed 1500 hours per year. Must be able and willing to work weekends and/or evenings as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of the social, economic, and psychological issues which impact persons;

Experience interviewing, evaluating, counseling and making observations for career counseling and exploration;

Experience conducting various job-skills classes such as resume writing/job applications, interviews skills and job search strategies;

Experience assisting students/young adults find suitable employment, attend college, vocational training or join the military;

Ability to provide individual and group career counseling to include career assessments;

Ability to assist with the planning and coordinating of career fairs;

Demonstrated knowledge of enrichment programs, scholarships, special programs to include ASVAB preparation and testing;

Ability to assist cadets with education planning to include application and selection process as well as GED and Credit
Recovery;

Demonstrated experience using Windows based computer software to include student tracking software and
database management;

Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required.

Additional Considerations

Experience working with at-risk youth preferred.
