Job Duties
The Language Access Assistant occupies an important role within the Department of Judicial Services at the Supreme Court of Virginia's Executive Secretary's Office. This role is central to managing Vendor Interpreters, as a part of the Virginia Interpreter Services program, and upholding compliance with statewide policies to ensure effective, accessible, and efficient interpreting services. This role is crucial for ensuring that the judiciary’s interpreting services are accessible, efficient, and effective, fulfilling the needs of diverse communities across the state.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Include, but are not limited to:
- Interpreting using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and rendering language assistance in any situation arising from legal cases in the courthouse or as needed by the limited English proficient public
- Translations (both sight and written)
- Collaborate and cooperate with other members of the team and share information with contract interpreters as needed.
- Accurately complete daily activity logs, calendars, regular reports, or other documentation as required
- Participate in research and other projects designed to increase the scope, quality and depth of services provided by the program, including the court interpreter certification process.
- Actively seek Court Interpreter Certification.
- Attend classes to improve Interpreting Skill
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to be appointed by judicial officers in program court
- Extensive, current experience interpreting in a court setting
- Proven computer skills
- Excellent written English skills
- Familiar with the nuances of language, and legal systems, and cultural differences in the countries where both the source and target languages are spoken, and demonstrate continued work toward enhancing such knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of Virginia interpreting guidelines and canons of professional conduct
Additional Considerations
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Translation skills a plus
- Proof of continuing education in court interpretation
- Position may require some travel.
