Job Duties
The Supervising Deputy Clerk (Grade 12) manages the day-to-day operations of the post-court division within a high-volume, fast-paced court. As a key member of the court management team, the supervisor directs and manages a staff of 10 courtroom clerks. Applicants must have a sincere desire to serve the citizens of Henrico County. This position works under the direction of the Clerk of Court and established judicial policies and administrative procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities – Duties performed are the same as those supervised in addition to handling management tasks that include recruitment, training, coaching and counseling staff. The supervisor plans, schedules and monitors all post-court responsibilities, manages courtroom coverage, maintains accountability amongst post-court staff, conducts evaluations, researches case management issues, ensures compliance with statutory requirements, and other duties as assigned.
Qualified applicants must possess a can-do attitude, be able to meet strict deadlines, handle high volume of paperwork, lead equitably and with integrity. Candidate should have proven record of reliable attendance and must maintain exceptional skill to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment. Empathy and trauma-informed customer service skills are also crucial for success in this role.
Applicant must have the ability to explain procedures in a clear and easy to understand manner, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and have an advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software, specifically in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
The post-court staff is responsible for the preparation of court dockets, in-court support, assessing fines and costs, receipting financial transactions, record management, and providing information by phone and in person to the public, attorneys, and supporting agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred. Most competitive applicants will have considerable court or legal experience, as well as prior experience in a trauma informed environment. Applicants should be highly organized and possess significant knowledge, skill and ability in public service. Some supervisory experience preferred with proven record of time and performance management.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: lifting up to 20 lbs; bending or reaching to retrieve files; long periods of sitting.
