Job Duties

We’re looking for an experienced, reliable, and hardworking General Services Technician to play a vital role in supporting our public health efforts. This position requires a dedicated individual with practical knowledge and a strong commitment to community service. This is a dynamic, hands-on role that is not facility-based but essential to helping protect and promote community health. Restricted Position: This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Public Health Infrastructure Grant period ending November 2027. The availability of funding is scheduled for review November 2027 and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of fund



In this role, you will:

  • Work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and outside regular business hours
  • Support mass community health initiatives such as drive-thru vaccination clinics
  • Assist with community events and emergency public health operations, including mobile medical clinics and shelters
  • Operate heavy equipment safely and effectively
  • Work outdoors for extended periods, often in various weather conditions
  • Pay close attention to detail, ensuring smooth and efficient operations


Surplus Property

  • Receive, record, and manage surplus office equipment, modular furniture, miscellaneous materials, and supplies held in inventory
  • Maintains inventory and disposal of surplus property items that include but not limited to: office panels, work surfaces, excess office equipment such as printers, fax machines and furniture
  • Manages and reports on materials and office items stored in the building
  •  Performs minor repairs to property
  • Assists office in procuring and delivering surplus property from external agencies and State Surplus Warehouse
  • Assists in planning and implementation of surplus property disposal through the most cost-effective avenues
  •  Identifies high value and demand items; maintains a surplus store
  • Maintains familiarity with needs within the building and districts to distribute valuable pieces within VDH and to keep an effective inventory of high demand items
  • Responsible for cleanliness and order of surplus property to maintain an orderly space


General Support

  • Provides guidance and assists with the assessment of office space needs and the configuration/construction of office layouts and office moves
  •  Provides backup assistance with the sorting of mail to the various offices/units and the processing of outgoing of United Parcel Services (UPS) packages from the Mailroom on an as needed basis
  •  Provides general facilities assistance to include, but not limited to, moving boxes, maintaining patio umbrellas, coordinating large deliveries, and providing special event support on an as needed basis
  • Performs routine scheduled building related safety walks, floor by floor inspections for needed repairs, and general service tasks to maximize building functions without interruption of services
  • May provides backup to General Services operations for processing building access, parking assignments, and receptionist desk operations
  • Assists with special projects such as space allocation measurements and surveys on an as needed basis

Facility & Fleet Support

  • Assists the Facilities Manager in liaison functions with the Department of General Services
  • Performs small to moderate repairs on surplus property to restore or maintain value
  • Places and maintains cubicle walls and furniture, including set up, reconfiguration, and repair of cubicle office spaces
  • Routinely inspects building to identify maintenance needs, fixing very minor issues or reporting the need to Facilities Manager for DGS support
  •  Performs spot checks and cleaning on assigned vehicles
  •  Takes vehicles to and picks up from DGS Fleet for regularly scheduled maintenance, state inspections, and repair
  •  Performs data entry tasks to support fleet
  • Acts as primary back up for Fleet Administrator
  • Participates in fleet email monitoring; prepares monthly fleet exception reports

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with inventory management and warehouse/storage operations
  • Experience working independently
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet due dates
  • Experience with hand tools to make minor repairs
  •  Ability to move office furniture and equipment while following design requirements
  • Ability to distribute mail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  •  Ability to work well with others and to provide excellent customer service
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds alone
  •  Valid State Driver's License to operate a vehicle while conducting business for the agency

Additional Considerations

  • Proven project management skills
  • Possession of a valid Class A driver’s license to operate box trucks, RVs, and other heavy equipment safely and effectively is highly desirable.
