The vision of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction is to ensure, through high academic expectations, standards and accountability, that effective education programs are established and maintained in Virginia’s public elementary, middle, and high schools. The mission, in cooperation with local school boards and colleagues within the Department, is to increase student learning and achievement and to support the growth of excellence and best practices that spark student engagement and postsecondary readiness.
The Division for Student Outcomes and School Quality seeks to ensure every school in Virginia is supporting the learning and academic development of students from early childhood through 12th grade. This includes implementing federal and state accountability requirements, ensuring assessments align with these requirements and providing meaningful information to support student learning, overseeing instructional improvement planning, and supporting related initiatives of the Governor, General Assembly, and Virginia Board of Education. The division is responsible for prioritizing student outcomes and performance, Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework, strengthening and scaling school quality resources, supporting effective practices for student improvement, and providing technical assistance to teachers and schools in greatest need. The enhanced Division will also have a component dedicated solely to excellence and best practices to better support teachers, principals, and school leaders with replicating and scaling what is most effective for student learning. The Division plays a critical role in providing insights on outcomes and measurement strategies for school models and strategies that strengthen personalization, acceleration, pathways, and other innovative strategies in teaching and learning.
The Director of Mathematics provides statewide leadership, content area expertise, and strategic oversight for mathematics education from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. This position is responsible for ensuring that all students have access to high-quality mathematics instruction by guiding the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of evidence-based practices, programs, standards, and instructional practices. The Director leads analysis of student achievement data to evaluate the effectiveness of mathematics program, identifies strengths and areas of growth, and directs initiatives that improve educator practice and student outcomes. The Director collaborates with stakeholders to ensure that mathematics program prepares students for enlistment, enrollment in postsecondary institutions, and employment. This role ensures alignment with federal and state requirements, as well as priorities of the Governor, General Assembly, and State Board of Education. In addition, the Director collaborates with educator preparation programs to ensure aspiring mathematics educators are well-prepared to teach Virginia’s students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to use data to inform customized support to schools and school divisions.
- Knowledge of developmental progress from fundamental concepts to advanced skills in mathematics including number and operational sense, algebraic reasoning, geometric reasoning, and reasoning with data and statistics.
- Knowledge of effective practices for mathematics instruction.
- Ability to lead the identification and support the implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) that fit the context of each school division.
- Knowledge of the role of mathematics in Virginia’s accountability program focusing on Standards of Learning (SOL), curriculum and instructional practices, and local, state, and federal education policies and regulations.
- Knowledge of effective practices for engaging adult learners.
- Knowledge of competency-based and personalized learning models.
- Ability to manage state and federal grants.
- Ability to work collaboratively across divisions.
- Ability to promote the value of accelerated coursework for students.
- Ability to lead stakeholder groups and use information from stakeholders to inform continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong project management and time management skills.
- Ability to supervise, inspire, and evaluate staff.
- Expertise in data-informed decision making and continuous improvement models.
- Knowledge of instructional technology tools and skills and their application for student learning.
- Proficiency in the use of applications in the Microsoft Office suite.
Additional Considerations
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in mathematics, curriculum, or a related area, or equivalent combination of skills and experience; advanced degree preferred.
- Significant demonstrated experience teaching mathematics.
- Experience in providing staff professional development in mathematics.
- Experience is writing or managing educational grants awarded by the state, federal government, foundations, or other agencies.
- Experience in leading mathematics programs in a school, central office, state education agency, or federal agency
