Job Duties

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking an energetic, dynamic and diligent Environmental Health (EH) professional, with strong customer service skills to serve as our EH Supervisor. The EH Supervisor reports to the EH Manager and provides formal administrative, programmatic and performance management support. The position supervises staff covering several areas such as food safety, aquatic health, rabies abatement communicable disease investigation, and investigation of general environmental complaints.

Our staff are provided with a unique opportunity for training and career development within the Environmental Health field. We have elected to participate in the FDA Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards program, which encourages and enables us to continuously improve and set high goals for our food safety program. We are also very involved in the National Capital Area Environmental Health Association (NCAEHA) and the Virginia Environmental Health Association (VEHA), with team members currently serving on both of those associations. The EH division also provides dedicated training time for professional development that can be used for staff to obtain and maintain their Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and Certified Professional in Food Safety CP-FS) credentials through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA).

Serves as a supervisor in the environmental health program with formal administrative, programmatic and performance management responsibilities for multiple staff in support of work unit goals and objectives in areas such as food sanitation, on-site soils evaluation, private well inspection, rabies abatement, communicable disease investigation, migrant labor camp inspection, classification of shellfish growing areas and investigation of general environmental complaints. Certifications of the Environmental Health Specialist Senior are required if performing inspections or evaluations of that level. The Environmental Health Technical Specialist certifications are preferred but required if performing the duties.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of technical and operational aspects of environmental health programs.
• Experience providing effective supervision and leadership of professional and technical staff.
• Experience evaluating programmatic needs assessments, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of service delivery.
• Experience identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
• Strong communication skills, to include communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience and conveying verbal information clearly.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in the administration of public environmental health programs
• Environmental Health Specialist Senior certifications are preferred
• Environmental Health Technical Specialist certifications are preferred
• Certified Professional of Food Safety (CP-FS), Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and/or VDH Certified Food Safety District Standardization Officer (DSO)
• Bilingual
