Job Duties

This position supports regular readiness and administrative activities of the Division, VDEM regions, Operations Bureau, and the agency with the intent of increasing capacity to support critical tasks or missions. Operational Support Specialist will support the development and operations of the IMT Program, Virginia EOC, and Regional Coordination Centers. This position provides direct and comprehensive all-hazards emergency management support throughout Virginia, as directed, in response to incidents, events or other activities as necessary.

This position is eligible for one day of telework per week. Due to the public-facing nature of the role, regular onsite presence is required.

All VDEM employees are designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, and natural or man-made disasters/events as directed. This may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee’s official Position Description. Operational Support Specialist will serve as all-hazards emergency management generalist, supporting emergency management, response and recovery operations across the commonwealth.

Minimum Qualifications

- Considerable knowledge of the roles of state, local, and federal governments in emergencies, including emergency response policies, procedures, and regulations such as NIMS.
- Skilled in using data analysis to adjust projects and adapt to changes in program activities.
- Skills in developing training, standard operating procedures and doctrine.
- Ability to lead planning, safety, and field operations, and to accurately evaluate potential emergency situations.
- Skill to build rapport, consensus and collaboration which spans regional, state and local stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, set goals, solve problems, and make timely, independent decisions that support VDEM’s mission and local emergency management efforts.
- Proficient in Microsoft products to include Teams.

The salary for this position is negotiable up to the maximum hiring range listed in this posting. Offers will not be made outside of the hiring range. This is a restricted position due to the funding source.
