Job Duties
The Court of Appeals of Virginia (Court) is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Chief Deputy Clerk. The core responsibility of this position is to assist the Clerk in the management of the Clerk’s office staff and the work of the Clerk’s Office. This position reports to the Clerk of the Court.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Learning and eventually co-managing the Clerk’s Office operations, which includes the development of an in-depth understanding of the functions and operations of the Clerk’s Office teams (Case and Records Administration, Motions, Dockets, and Dispositions).
- Spearheading the drafting of the Court’s annual reports and supervising the gathering and synthesis of data for those reports.
- Organizing, overseeing, and managing various annual educational programs for Court personnel, including the annual Judicial Administrative Staff Conference.
- Overseeing and managing the flow and disposition, and at times editing and proofreading, interlocutory and procedurally defective dispositive orders of the Court after panel review.
- Reviewing weekly reports of procedurally defective cases and managing the presentation of those cases to the Court for disposition.
- Serving on the Clerk’s Office Executive Committee, which is the policy development and implementation arm and problem-solving think-tank of the Clerk’s Office.
- Managing the Clerk’s Office operations during the Clerk’s absence.
- Managing the Clerk’s Office personnel operations, including leave approvals and human resource matters.
- Working with the Managing Deputy Clerk of Court Operations to improve the case management system and the reports available from that system.
- Working with the Managing Deputy and Information Technology professionals in the Office of the Executive Secretary to develop a modern case management system to accommodate the Court’s evolving processes and technological needs.
- Working with the Office of the Executive Secretary, the Chief Staff Attorney, the Law Librarian, and the Reporters of Decisions to coordinate procedures to support the Judges and provide services to the public.
- Monitoring and commenting upon proposed changes to the Rules of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.
- Other duties as directed by the Clerk.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a Juris Doctor from an ABA-approved law school.
- Member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar.
- Strong interpersonal skills that balance the need for controlled and measured demeanor when managing staff but exhibits understanding and empathy.
- Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal skills.
- Ability to demonstrate problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Proficient with office software, including Microsoft Operating Suite and legal research programs.
Additional Considerations
The most competitive candidates will have at least two years of management experience in a court or law office setting and demonstrated a commitment of loyalty to a court or other organization over an extended period.
