Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. The role of the Senior Budget Analyst is to provide concise analysis of program and financial operations, including identifying issues and problem solving. This role will provide technical support for automated data systems and coordination of specific projects and tasks as assigned.

Job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Ability to think strategically and anticipate agency needs for the future.
  • Ability to self-start, work independently or as part of a team, stay current with state and federal regulations, updates, changes, etc., negotiate with a clear objective in mind, and to notify agency personnel of any necessary changes as they may relate to them and/or their duties.
  • Ability to manipulate large data sets through automated systems, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to ensure accuracy and deadline achievement, appropriate analysis of data and situations, and sound advice and recommendations to Department managers and other key members of management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and ability to oversee activities regarding, program operations and fiscal practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience of program budget planning, formulation, evaluation, and execution.
  • Knowledge of automated software, to include financial applications and database entry.
  • Demonstrated consultation with others on matters related to budget and fiscal activities.
  • Skilled in providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers of the agency.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience should include using computer applications for complex and detailed analysis.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable experience in budget, economic or legislative analysis, financial planning and forecasting, development and maintenance of financial systems, or financial management; or an equivalent combination of financial experience and education which is not limited to accounting.
  • Experience in financial management in a medium to large entity with multiple fund sources and budgets.
