Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health is currently seeking a Data Solution Engineer to join our Office of Information Management. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data solutions that enable reliable, scalable, and secure access to enterprise data. Working within OIM (Office of Information Management) and under guidance from SEAT (Solutions Engineering and Architecture Team), this role bridges technical engineering with governance practices, ensuring that data assets are optimized for analytics, compliance, and operational use. The engineer collaborates with database administrators, data stewards, and the data management team to deliver high-quality solutions that support organizational decision-making.
Some of the key job responsibilities are as follows:
• Lead staff through onboarding, offboarding, and training programs.
• Establish and review work assignments, priorities, and performance improvement strategies.
• Ensure workplace safety and compliance with training requirements.
• Conduct performance monitoring, appraisals, and document underperformance per state guidelines.
• Provide regular feedback, coaching, and professional development opportunities to support employee growth.
• Design and implement ETL/ELT pipelines to integrate diverse data sources into the warehouse.
• Develop data marts, views, and APIs to support reporting, analytics, and operational needs.
• Optimize queries, schemas, and storage for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
• Partner with DBAs to maintain database performance, security, and availability.
• Collaborate with data stewards to enforce data quality, lineage, and governance standards.
• Support metadata management and master data initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience in data engineering, ETL/ELT development, or database solutions.
• SQL skills and experience with relational and cloud databases (e.g., BigQuery, Oracle, SQL Server).
• Familiarity with data governance, stewardship, and metadata management practices.
• Working knowledge with cloud platforms (OCI, GCP, Azure, AWS) and modern data tools.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and business teams.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in the Healthcare domain, with a focus on Public Health preferred
