Job Duties

About the Opportunity
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking an experienced Fleet Coordinator to manage our agency's vehicle fleet and law enforcement equipment vehicle programs. This position combines operational oversight with financial management and regulatory compliance, serving as a key link between DMV and partner agencies including the Virginia State Police and Department of General Services.

As our Agency Transportation Officer (ATO), you'll have significant autonomy to modernize DMV’s vehicle management process and tools while ensuring every decision aligns with Commonwealth policies and DMV's mission to serve Virginia.

What the Role Involves
You'll oversee the complete lifecycle of DMV's vehicle fleet—managing reservations, assignments, utilization tracking, replacement scheduling, and asset inventory. This includes coordinating preventive maintenance schedules, warranty claims, recalls, and inspections to keep our fleet operational and compliant.

Financial management is central to this role. You'll develop and monitor fleet budgets, track fuel and repair expenditures, conduct cost-benefit analyses, and provide data-driven recommendations to leadership. Your financial forecasting and variance analysis will help shape strategic decisions about fleet investments and resource allocation.

As DMV's representative on the Uniform Agency Requirement Committee (UARC), you'll coordinate with the Virginia State Police on law enforcement vehicle equipment. This involves managing the procurement and installation of radio kits, sirens, lighting systems, and related equipment, then maintaining comprehensive inventory and equipment databases.
Your analytical skills will be put to good use transforming operational and financial data into meaningful insights. You'll identify trends, assess risks, recommend cost-savings opportunities, and develop reports and dashboards for leadership review.

Regulatory compliance runs through every aspect of this position. You'll ensure adherence to Virginia State Code, DGS policies, and Library of Virginia documentation standards. This includes coordinating with the DGS Accident Prevention Committee and multiple state agencies to analyze accident reports and improve fleet safety.

Day-to-day, you'll maintain detailed vehicle records, prepare required compliance reports, manage DMV reimbursements, and serve as the go-to resource for fleet-related questions across the agency.

Knowledge and Abilities
•Understanding of Virginia State Code, DGS State Driver Policy, and motor carrier regulations
•Knowledge of fleet management principles including preventive maintenance and vehicle lifecycle management
•Ability to interpret state and federal motor carrier laws and vehicle safety standards
•Experience with procurement practices, inventory control, and budget tracking
•Strong customer service orientation with responsive follow-through
•Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment
•Comfortable collaborating across multiple agencies and departments

Why This Role Matters
This position plays a vital role in supporting DMV's operations across the Commonwealth. You'll work with a high degree of independence while collaborating with law enforcement and regulatory partners. Your work directly impacts fleet safety, operational efficiency, and fiscal responsibility.

The role requires analytical thinking and attention to detail in a compliance-focused environment. You'll balance operational needs with financial stewardship and regulatory requirements while supporting DMV's enforcement, motor carrier, and public service missions.
