Job Duties
“The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts."
Provides effective graphic design, planning, production, and dissemination of projects and related materials that have a statewide impact on VDH programs and initiatives, reaching a wide audience of both internal and external customers.
Provides support across all aspects of graphic design, public relations, and educational material development, while maximizing the use of information technology tools in the design and production process.
Ensures that all publications and materials meet VDH brand standards, and promotes the creation of evidence-based, effective materials that adhere to professional standards. Performs administrative tasks as assigned.
*This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Public Health Infrastructure Grant, period ending 11/30/2027. The availability of funding is scheduled for review and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Portfolio demonstrates professional graphic design work across print, digital, campaign materials, and motion graphics.
2. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including but not limited to InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe XD.
3. Familiarity with website design principles, including experience with WordPress.
4. Strong knowledge of visual design principles (color theory, typography, composition, branding).
5. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
6. Ability to produce high-quality, consistent design deliverables aligned with agency standards.
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills for client discussions and delivery of design services.
8. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on design-related projects.
Additional Considerations
1. Experience in the public sector or in public campaigns, demonstrating clear, concise, and culturally sensitive communication for diverse audiences.
2. Knowledge of accessibility standards (Section 508/WCAG) and ability to apply inclusive design principles.
3. Experience with social media content creation (graphics, layouts, posts).
4. Experience producing motion graphics or multimedia assets to support digital campaigns.
5. Ability to adapt design work for both print and digital platforms while maintaining brand consistency.
