Job Duties
The Department of Student Health Services at Virginia State University is in search of a licensed, dynamic and independent Nurse Practitioner.
The candidate will provide comprehensive nursing care as required utilizing the Nursing Process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Nurse Practitioner will assess the physical and emotional needs of patients, in collaboration with the VSU SHS team, to plan for and provide the delivery of health care services.
Providing nursing/medical treatment and advise to patients, including evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic conditions.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prescribes and/or dispenses required medications per protocol and state licensure limitations.
- Obtains patient history and related pertinent information.
- Examines patients, orders and utilizes laboratory and diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of health conditions.
Performs necessary treatment, and follow-up treatment as may be medically indicated, in collaboration with VSU SHS team.
- Refers for consultation to community health providers, public health, medical, surgical or other health services those patients he/she is not qualified to treat or for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment procedures.
- Assists with preventive health programs such as immunizations, disease detection and disease prevention activities as assigned/requested.
- Assists all team members to function as a team and according to their professional standard of practice.
Willing to participate in quality assurance programs and in planning, instituting, evaluating and revising health care programs at VSU SHS, as requested.
- Documents completely and thoroughly using established medical record system.
- Performs other reasonable duties in conjunction with their position at VSU as directed.
- Supports a team-based approach to patient-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications
Current Virginia Nurse Practitioner license and professional certification as required for Nurse Practitioner specialty.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Licensed as a RN and Licensed Nurse Practitioner in the State of Virginia. Autonomous Practice designation.
Graduate of an approved program of instruction for Adult, Pediatric , Women’s Health , Midwifery, Family Nurse Practitioners.
Certification as an Adult, Women’s Health , Midwifery, Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
Current BLS, CPR required.
Ability to work without on-site physician supervision, as indicated by state licensure. License indicating Autonomous Practice authority in the state of Virginia required.
Prescriptive authority, NPI/DEA required.
Experience in Women’s Health required.
Experience in Primary Care required.
Experience with phlebotomy and vaccinations required.
Demonstrated history of competence in performing essential job functions, including care of men, women and non-binary individuals.
Able to function well with Student Health team and other VSU collaborating departments.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Respect for patient confidentiality.
Sensitive and responsive to the administrative needs and requirements of VSU.
Pleasant, positive personality. Ability to maintain professional demeanor, despite challenging or high-pressure circumstances.
Ability to work after hours with schedule adjustment, occasionally, if requested.
Additional Considerations
Participation/leadership in professional associations such as the American Nursing Association preferred.
Evidence of current vaccinations or vaccination declination form and TB screening/test results.
Three to five years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
Previous experience in Public Health, Adolescent health, ED, and/or Urgent Care setting preferred.
