Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, is seeking an individual to serve as Weights and Measures Inspector in a territory that includes the Northern Virginia Cities of Fairfax, Manassas, Manassas Park and the counties of Arlington and Prince William. Duties include enforcing the Weights and Measures Law and related regulations; testing, inspecting, and determining the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used commercially in Virginia including motor fuel dispensers and small capacity weighing devices; sampling of motor fuels; conducting point-of-sale inspections; investigating related consumer complaints; completing documentation of activities; and preparing investigative summaries as needed. Position may require occasional overnight travel. The selected applicant must reside, or be willing to relocate, within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory and be able to meet the physical demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of inspection, investigation and enforcement procedures related to petroleum, point-of-sale or scales industries (either sales or service). The ability to report facts accurately and to understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations. Must have excellent customer service skills and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely and have basic mechanical aptitude and mathematical ability. Effective organizational and planning skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency with standard office software applications is required. This position is physically demanding. Applicants must have the ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis, bend as needed, distinguish colors and exhibit manual dexterity, and be willing to work outside in various weather conditions. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is desirable in addition to experience in enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures is highly desirable. An equivalent combination of training & experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge & abilities may substitute for this education & experience.
